What EMDR actually does
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most researched trauma treatments in the world, recognized by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association as a frontline therapy for PTSD.
When something overwhelming happens, the brain can store the memory in a 'raw' state, frozen with the original images, body sensations, and beliefs intact. EMDR uses gentle bilateral stimulation (guided eye movements or taps) to help the brain finish processing that memory, so it can be filed away as something that happened, rather than something that keeps happening.
